About Nigel

I am a self-taught wood carver since working as a hands-on forester in the 1990s. I now work part-time as a forestry officer and am able to develop my creative side through producing sculptures in wood. My carvings tend to be large works produced for public spaces and for schools but I also produce some smaller pieces for private commissions.

I have produced some abstract sculptures but most of my work is figurative and whatever the subject I look for bold, simple shapes that catch the eye and if figurative, I try to make the sculpture believable. I know that I am still developing as a sculptor and try to avoid repetition.

2010 is the third year that I have taken part in Sculptree, it is the only group carving event that I take part in and I enjoy it because we have the time to make an original sculpture well (although there is never quite enough time). I also enjoy the company of the other sculptors since I usually work alone.

I have been a supporter of Tree Aid for at least as long as I have been a wood carver, I like the way that it is addressing a cause of poverty: environmental degradation, as well as the symptoms. I cannot say that I enjoy the auction which I still find traumatic but it is a very effective way to support Tree Aid as well as being worthwhile for the sculptors.

Nigel’s 2010 Sculpture: Sitting Gorilla

We recognise the form of a gorilla as like ourselves but more powerful and more peaceful. Starting with a tree trunk I hope to be able to give the impression of the bulk of the creature.
